Polish Cuisine – Peculiarities

When we try to describe some national cuisine, we speak about style of cooking and the most popular products. Of course the way the dishes serve does matter. The factors influencing the result are usually connected with geography and history of the country. In Poland we’ll find a lot of things in common with West Slavic states as to the eating habits. Here they like meat, pork in particular, winter vegetables like cabbage, carrots, parsnips, celery root, and herbs. The grains are very popular and used for various tasty and healthy porridges. So, the Polish cuisine is hearty and can be rather complicated but in general the simple products and the cooking methods are used.

Nowadays you can find various foods in Poland including the fast-food bug. But at the same time you will meet the chefs which know the ancient secrets about berries, herbs and mushrooms, using them in ancestral recipes. Rather often the key ingredients can be made at home instead of being bought in the store. The Poles prefer appetizing dishes that is why visiting the locals you can count on the sumptuous table. There are some must-try recipes. Pierogi or pies in English is a very popular dish. They are usually baked with fillings made of meat or cottage cheese. But you should spend a lot of time to cook them. That is why we will regard the simplest dish like Haluski as an example of the local traditions.

What is Haluski?

If you prefer a comfort-food dish, you will hardly find the better one in Poland cuisine. Haluski is a buttery dish made of egg noodles and fried cabbage. It is very popular among locals and foreigners. You can compare it to the pasta with additions which is usually prepared in a pan just like any other macaroni products.

Being a rather quick recipe it does not demand particular skills and any expensive and rare ingredients. This is a budget dish we would say but still it is rather unique as to its tastes and compatibility of the products. It can be easily stored in the container in a fridge if you prepare a large batch for some days. You can fill the crowd with hearty healthy food making a huge pan of Haluski. It will suit the vegetarians too as far as you can refuse adding meat though in some versions of the classic recipe there is such addition. The noodles can be made at home if you know how to prepare them or bought in the store and boiled in salty water.

The way to cook

First you should cook egg noodles as it is needed in accordance with the instructions. Add some oil so that the noodles will not stick together and leave them alone for some time. Meanwhile in a deep skillet you should melt butter and cook onion, stirring it continuously during ten minutes. The onion should become soft but not brown just starting to get golden. Now this is the right time to add the cut cabbage. Mix it with onion, remaining over the medium heat for another 5 minutes without a lid and for about 10 minutes with a lid. Add the noodles to the cabbage, stir carefully and serve hot.

In general, they cook this dish with different additional ingredients such as sliced sausages or meat. You are free to add minced garlic, seasonings, and even other vegies like tinned peas. But the key components are still noodles and cabbage.

Taking into account that the recipe contains the cabbage, the dish is rather healthy as far as this vegetable is full of vitamins even after heat treating. It includes beta-carotene, calcium, potassium, a number of antioxidants and vitamin B-6. It is good for skin and hair, reduces cancer risk and improve nervous and brain system health.
